New research indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
